YMCA Cornwall provides 40 self-contained one-bedroom flats and bedsits across West Cornwall. We are currently in the process of re-developing the Penzance site sports hall to create an additional 14 flats. We do not currently have any emergency accommodation.
We provide supported accommodation for young people aged between 16 and 25 years for up to two years, providing a safe, stable environment for residents and with guidance from a team of dedicated support workers. Together these elements provide a secure foundation from which young people can move towards independent living, remain in education and find employment.
Support workers create a personalised support plan with all of our residents to enable each of them to set and achieve targets concerning education, employment and training. Where required, we signpost to other organisations and help residents to arrange and attend meetings.
"It's more than just a roof over my head - my support worker is really helping me to piece my life back together, so I can live life and face life."
Additional funding enables us to provide training and equipment for essential life skills such as planning meals, cooking and managing a budget, as well as activities and excursions for residents who would not otherwise have the opportunity. We encourage healthy lifestyle choices and regularly organise opportunities for young people to go out for a walk together and explore West Cornwall.
When a young person is ready to move on or out of supported accommodation, we offer a resettlement service which provides up to six months of ongoing tailored support.
